Hello fellow traveler. We are Laurens & Edouard- two Belgians with a great smell for adventure. In June of 2017, we took 4 days to discover Taiwan using a rented van. The Ford Ponto Vista is a cute and reliable local Taiwanese van, which we rented for little money. Not only a mode of transport- it determined our whole trip. The van served as our safe while hiking and visiting places, a hostel close by the sea, and during the day the van was our music bar… In nutshell; it made our Van Life as it was: legendary!
They often call Taiwan, “Formosa”, which means beautiful. Well, we have to say; we discovered why people came up with that name. And we only hope that more people get to see this wonderful Island. Let’s relive those moments by going through some pictures and our concise trip report.
Beginning our Van Life in the heart of Taipei we drove north on highway 2A (2甲) to Yangmingshan National Park. On our way up the mountain we were surprised by beautiful views of the Taipei skyline as well as the mountain ranges. Before we set up camp in Jinshan, we visited the Siaoyoukeng recreation area, which was characterized by post-volcanic activities. We have never witnessed sulfur fumaroles and sulfur crystals before. It made us remember that the earth has a very long and mysterious history. Including stops, it took us 4 hours to get to Jinshan, where we got some grub and set up camp on the beach. Using stranded wood, we made a campfire accompanied with some cold beers. The ocean during nighttime offered the ideal refreshment without getting too cold and its waves sang us to sleep later that night.
